The following is from Pottermore, told from the point of view of the Sorting Hat:

Now each of these four founders Formed their own house, for each Did value different virtues In the ones they had to teach. By Gryffindor, the bravest were Prized far beyond the rest; For Ravenclaw, the cleverest Would always be the best; For Hufflepuff, hard workers were Most worthy of admission; And power-hungry Slytherin Loved those of great ambition. The physical school is located in the Scottish Highlands. Enrollment consists of Students from great Britain and Ireland. The school is funded by the ministry of magic. Unfortunately, like most wizarding schools it's exact location is a mystery as the school is enchanted to be unplottable. It is believed to have been established some time in the 10th century, and is considered to be one of the finest wizarding schools in the world. Enrollment is determined at birth and students are accepted at the age of eleven. In the event of a muggle-born student or a student without any prior knowledge of the magical world, a representative from the school will be dispatched to help the student. The school motto is Latin for never tickle a sleeping dragon.
